Would you like to know more about the men from our area who fought in the Civil War? The 3rd Annual Civil War Days are October 5th & 6th, 2019, from 10 am to 4 pm each day. The free event is held at Mill Hollow and Bacon Woods Reservation on North Ridge Road in Vermilion, Ohio.
Men from the 8th OVI (Ohio Volunteer Infantry) were recruited from NE Ohio at the start of the war from Cuyahoga, Erie, Lorain and Media counties. A small band of men from the 8th became part of a crucial lynchpin in the battle of Gettysburg—the battle where the Confederacy reached their high water mark, meaning the furthest north they ever traveled. After Gettysburg, Lee and his Confederate army were never able to take the war to the northern states, and the men of the 8th OVI are among the largely unsung heroes who ultimately repelled the rebel forces.
The 3rd Annual Civil War Days, hosted by Brownhelm Historical Association, will feature freelance author and speaker Kelly Boyer Sagert. Sagert will provide an overview of these men, particularly in Antietam and Gettysburg—while highlighting one specific man, Wells Waite Miller from Castalia, Ohio in Erie County.
