Sgt. Holmes, as a member of the Vermilion Police Department (VPD) Marine Patrol Unit, stopped in at the YMCA Day Camp on Monday morning to talk to the children about water safety. He also fitted each child with a brand new life vest donated by Romp’s Water Port and several other area donors including: Ferry Legal LLC, ACC Adult Home Care, Bulan's Boatyard, Julie Mac, Joyce Sherwood, Rick Thrasher, Vita Plate Distributors and the VPD. Each child now has their own assigned life vest to wear at the pool and at other water related activities during camp.
Drowning is often silent, takes as little as five minutes, and usually happens when an adult is nearby. No one can watch a child every second. Children between birth and five years of age are advised to wear life jackets on beaches, docks and in boats. Children between the ages of 6 to 11 should wear life jackets on docks, boats, inner tubes and river banks.
The VPD Marine Patrol Unit continues to make safety on our waterways its #1 priority.
